Shiseido gallery is 100th anniversary in 2019. Shinzo Fukuhara who is a founder and the first president of Shiseido established a basis for making cosmetics and design. Moreover, he is also known as a pioneer of photographer in early modern Japan. After many years, we explored and looked back on Fukuhara’s activity, and we found out him as a manager of Shiseido company, and also as an artist who had done more than a photographer to actively contributed to the society.

What kind of creativity will be introduced for today’s society by his aesthetics that is explored after the century since the foundation of Shiseido Gallery. Shiseido gallery will take place 100th anniversary projects [ Going beyond and participating in beauty: Shinzo Fukuhara's aesthetics Shinzo Fukuhara / ASSEMBLE, THE EUGENE Studio ] from 19/October/2018 (Fri) until 17/March/2019 (Sun). There is going to have two different exhibitions following this theme.
(1st : 19/October/2018 (Fri) - 26/December (Sun) 2nd : 16/January/2019 (Wed) - 17/March/2019 (sun))

Shinzo Fukuhara / ASSEMBLE, THE EUGENE Studio

This projects inherit nature of Fukuhara, and invite ASSEMBLE and THE EUGENE Studio who act as a social creative and introduce new state of art to make them collaborate with the time beyond the 100 years. Attempt of this project is creativity and dynamic cooperation in-between Fukuhara and them.

ASSEMBLE and THE EUGENE Studio have different activity bases and approaches. However, their creativity is both beyond the past, and they update the quality of cooperative and collective creativeness such as dialogue, supports, and challenge each other to break preconceived ideas to indicate new way of society, business and art.
Through this projects, they will share Fukuhara’s way of thinking, [ Going beyond and participating in beauty ] with us (audience) by creating platform or base which allow conversation and encounter. 1st exhibition’s setting is produced by THE EUGENE Studio, and ASSEMBLE is creating actual space itself.
ASSEMBLE is London based collective architectural group, and in 2015, they received a Turner prize which is respected prize in England. (2nd exhibition that will start from 2019 attempt to create beauty beyond the location by having a workshop of Granby Four Streets in Liverpool which was a winning project.

THE EUGENE Studio is Japanese artist studio that is getting attention internationally. their representative work is 『White Painting』. This work attempts to pick up one’s collaborative way of thinking in global environment and also to update art history. (Solo exhibition 「1/2 Century later.」took place at Shiseido gallery on November 2017.)

The way Shinzo Fukuhara, ASSEMBLE, and THE EUGENE Studio circulate the value and address society that produce a synergistic effect by participating beyond the set belief of creations are similar. This exhibition for 100th anniversary of Shiseido gallery is collaboration of 3 of the artists. This way of archival exhibition is rare, and it will also be experimental because it passes through space and time. We believe this will be the thing for us to share Fukushima’s creative activity and thought, which was a century ago.

A deductive curation

Moreover, as for the research of Shinzo Fukuharaʼ s aesthetics in this project, we have uniquely interpretated his philosophy which was the index of his activity through morphological analysis by AI / natural language processing , of more than 200 texts Fukuhara left behind; approximately 1,450,000 words about art and beauty. Original curation based on such new approach is another special feature of this exhibition. We hope our unique point of view and attemptation presented at this exhibition would be a precious opportunity to discover the possibility of beauty and creation in our future society.
